Assistant Specialist Position

 Aerodynamics and Energetics of Insect Flight

The Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, in the College of Biological Sciences, University of California, Davis, invites applications for a an Assistant Specialist position focused on Aerodynamics and Energetics of Insect Flight. The appointee will be expected to have substantial prior experience in this area, and to carry out independent, high-quality research in the area of insect flight behavior and kinematics, turbulent flow characterization, and respirometry of flying insects, consistent with the broad goals of the Combes Lab. Candidates with previous experience rearing/capturing and training bees, flies, and dragonflies, and with specialized knowledge of 3-d hot-wire anemometry systems and turbulent flow characterization, three-dimensional high-speed video analysis, design and control of automated tracking and automated video filming systems, and respirometry of flying insects are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates should also have prior experience presenting their work at national conferences, and contributing to or leading the production of manuscripts based on work related to these research areas.  

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree that includes coursework and/or research experience in organismal biology and fluid dynamics.  Successful applicants are expected to have a minimum of 3 years of experience working full-time in the specialized areas of research related to the position.
