A post-doctoral position is immediately available in the neuroscience laboratory under the direction of Prof. Earl Carstens at the University of California, Davis, Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior. The position is supported by an NIH R01 grant focusing on itch modulation. The position is initially anticipated as a 1-2 year position with the possibility of mutually agreeable extension.
The main focus of the laboratory is to investigate somatosensory physiology, and particularly itch, pain, temperature and touch. The NIH grant focuses on brain modulation of itch. We will use optogenetics and in vivo electrophysiology to investigate modulation of scratching and pruriceptive spinal transmission by activating descending aminergic pathways. Methods currently used by our lab include behavioral assessment of itch and pain, in vivo single-unit electrophysiology, optogenetics, immunohistochemistry, cell culture (DRG and trigeminal ganglion cells), calcium imaging and neuronal tract-tracing.
The laboratory has collaborations with other labs internationally that study itch, including the Charles Institute of Translational Dermatology, University College Dublin, the University of Bucharest, and others.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D in neuroscience or a closely-related field. Experience in behavioral assessment of itch and pain, and in vivo electrophysiology, is preferred. Applicants are requested to send a cover letter, curriculum vitae and names of 3 references to Prof. Earl Carstens (firstname.lastname@example.org).
