Skeletal Muscle Physiology Recruitment Seminar

Kedryn Baskin, PhD is a Postdoctoral Fellow with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Her research seminar will be focused on how the Mediator Complex regulates Polymerase II-driven transcription and how we have identified tissue specific roles for the ubiquitously expressed Mediator subunits Med12 and Med13. Med12 regulates calcium cycling in heart, but regulates metabolism and growth in skeletal muscle. Interestingly, cardiac Med13 regulates systemic metabolism through secreted metabolic factors. Our findings highlight the underappreciated endocrine function of the heart and future work will focus on the metabolic functions of a novel cardiac secreted factor.
